We all know that feeling – when we can finally open the windows and feel the spring breeze blowing through our house after a long, air-tight winter.
But when that breeze stirs up long hidden dust bunnies, it’s time to give our homes a good top to bottom cleaning. Here are a few tips to get the job done safely and efficiently.
Open and clean all windows. Make sure to go over the blinds and the window seals as well. A few drops of Dawn® dishwashing detergent in clean water is a great solution for this job.
Change all Filters
Starting with the basics, change all your A/C filters. This should be done twice a year at a minimum and if you have pets, once a quarter or more, depending on how clogged the filters become with animal hair. HEPA filters are especially good at trapping very small particles and are popular filters for homes with animals or inhabitants with allergies.
But there are more filters to consider! Did you know that you should change your refrigerator filter as well? Check out this link for recommended filter changes throughout your house.
Clean your Oven
Still smelling that spilled casserole every time you heat up your oven? It’s time to take care of that. Remember when using the self-cleaning function to remove the racks first. They will be damaged by the cleaning process. Don’t use any chemicals after the self-clean; just wipe down the inside of the oven with paper towels. Lastly, don’t use razors to remove debris inside your oven. This will damage the protective finish.
Toss the Trash
Give your belongings a critical review. If you haven’t used or worn it in a year, you probably don’t need it. Donate serviceable items to charity and throw the rest away. Less clutter means less items to dust.
Speaking of dusting, make sure to dust ALL vertical and horizontal surfaces. Chandeliers, spindles, and other tricky areas may require specialized poles or dusters, but it will be worth the effort to have a dust-free environment.
