Autism Awareness: 1 in every 59

In 2018, the CDC determined that approximately 1 in 37 boys and 1 in 151 girls are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). That’s an average of 1 in every 59 children.

The Riley Behavioral and Educational Center breaks down the facts and figures of ASD.

What are the signs of autism?

The timing and intensity of autism’s early signs vary widely. Some infants show hints in their first months. In others, behaviors become obvious as late as age 2 or 3. Not all children with autism show all the signs. Many children who don’t have autism show a few. That’s why professional evaluation is crucial.

What are the symptoms?

Autism’s core symptoms are social communication challenges and restricted, repetitive behaviors. In autism, these symptoms begin in early childhood (though they may go unrecognized), persist and interfere with daily living.

What causes autism?

There’s no one cause of autism. Research suggests that autism develops from a combination of genetic and non-genetic, or environmental, influences.
