As Congress begins its work for 2026, the Madison Chamber of Commerce is encouraging local businesses and community leaders to add their voices to a growing national call for meaningful permitting reform.
After progress in the U.S. House of Representatives last year, attention has now shifted to the Senate. Business organizations across the country—including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce—are urging lawmakers to build on that momentum and move legislation forward that modernizes outdated permitting processes.
Why Permitting Reform Matters
Modern, efficient permitting systems are essential for economic growth. Streamlined processes help communities and employers move forward with infrastructure projects, expand operations, attract new investment and create good-paying jobs. Improvements in this area can also enhance quality of life by supporting transportation projects, utilities, housing development and other critical initiatives.
The national coalition advocating for reform is aligned around four guiding principles:
-
Predictability – Clear timelines and expectations for approvals
-
Efficiency – Reduced delays and unnecessary red tape
-
Transparency – Open communication throughout the permitting process
-
Stakeholder Input – Meaningful engagement from businesses, communities and local leaders

This initiative builds on years of advocacy by the business community, including large-scale coalition efforts and national engagement campaigns aimed at highlighting the importance of permitting reform to America’s economic future.
The Madison Chamber of Commerce is proud to support policies that foster growth, strengthen our regional economy and help businesses succeed. If you have questions about this initiative or would like additional information, please contact the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
